Manpower availability
Each office has skilled technicians with trucks (vans) that are stocked with materials and tools to provide mechanical maintenance and repairs. These technicians, by nature of their mechanical ability to “fix things”, are inherently capable of many other types of repairs that would be necessitated by storm damage.
Communications
- Bell South provides us a (VPN) virtual private network, backed up by their bunker protected system.
- Our main computer system is designed to be mobile, in order to move it to another branch (in case a direct hit in Fort Lauderdale is imminent) and keep our data system operational.
- Each office has multiple Verizon air-cards and laptops for mobile internet connection.
- Each technician has a Verizon mobile phone with car charger.
- The company currently has one active satellite phone. The drawback of this capability is that it can only be used outside.
- Each office has walkie-talkie capabilities. The range of these devices is limited (usually less than 2 miles).
- A companywide Hurricane Survival guide is printed each year for our employees that include home and cell numbers for every employee.
Tasking capabilities
Hill York is licensed as a full service mechanical contractor in the State of Florida. We are limited by our license to normally perform the work of our trade. However, in emergency situations, we have been able to quickly make non-permitted repairs in order to protect life and property. Our most valuable resource is the ability to be on-site immediately after the storm passes to protect facilities from further damage.
Our technicians normally work by themselves, so they are fully self contained and comfortable with hazardous situations. They are also called upon at times to support and assist other trades (electricians, roofers, plumbers, elevator repairmen, etc.), so they are comfortable with those situations as well. Below is a short list of common disaster recovery work tasks that our technicians have experience and competence in. It is not an all encompassing task list.
- Air conditioning unit repairs and replacements.
- Refrigeration unit repairs and replacements.
- Condensate drain line repairs and replacements.
- Sheet metal duct repairs and replacements.
- Fiberglas duct repairs and replacements.
- Electrical repairs to equipment. (load side of breaker or disconnect switch)
- Storm shutter installation and removal.
- Boarding up of windows and doors that have been damaged.
- Boarding and sealing of roof penetrations to prevent water intrusion.
- Debris removal to protect life and property.
- Capping and safeguarding of exposed electrical wiring to prevent injury.
- Minor water extraction (using wet-vacs)
In addition to these capabilities, we have access to subcontractors that can provide a range of services that include: crane and hoisting, temporary cooling, moisture removal, electrical system repairs and replacement, roofing repairs, debris removal and disposal, plumbing repairs, etc.
Disaster Recovery Experience
We have direct experience with Hurricanes Charlie, Frances and Jeanne in 2004, and with Katrina, Rita and Wilma in 2005. Below are a few high profile organizations that we were able to help provide disaster recovery services to.
Charlotte County Schools relied on us to seal roof penetrations, board up broken windows, temporarily repair roofs and replace all the damaged a/c systems for their affected schools after Charlie hit the area as a category 5 storm. We had 22 trucks working on their schools within 24 hours after the storm struck.
Florida Power and Light used our technicians to quickly get their a/c systems working after Frances and Jeanne for their power generation facilities in Juno Beach, Florida.
Wal-Mart used our services to replace and repair all their damaged facilities (58 stores) from Naples to Fort Pierce after Wilma removed many of their package a/c units from their roofs.
Pre-Storm Capabilities
In addition to being able to provide post storm services, we have also served our customers well with pre-storm services. These services generally include helping to prepare their facility for a storm, once a threat has become imminent. It usually involves putting up storm shutters, securing exposed equipment, shutting down systems to prevent electrical damage, etc. The most common demand, and the item in shortest supply prior to a storm, is manpower to help get ready.
Summary
Hill York Service Corporation has significant resources available for disaster recovery. We have skilled manpower, tools, supplies, transportation, mobile communications and experience. We can quickly mobilize resources from a non-affected area to help supplement our resources in an affected area.
Immediately following a storm, the affected area is generally without power for a period time. This means that most of our normal work (a/c maintenance and repairs) is not necessary, enabling us to utilize our resources and talent helping storm affected customers.
Our company is growing quickly, and more resources become available to us daily. Our stated goal is to provide every resource we have to assist our clients when most needed.
