#SafetyCHAMP Program Produces Injury-Free 2015 At Two Florida Locations

What does it take to have no accidents at two company service areas for an entire calendar year and see a drop in incidents at two others?

“It’s about moving safety from just a bunch of policies to a way of life,” said Luis Moreno, Safety Director at Hill York, Florida’s leading commercial air conditioning and energy solutions company. “That level of awareness requires a program that inspires employees to take ownership of securing worksites, enhancing procedures, and protecting co-workers and customers from risk and injury.”

The Program

Launched in 2014, the #SafetyCHAMP program has been instrumental in improving on-the-job risk avoidance and reducing the number of injuries and time lost by employees in Hill York’s four Florida service areas. The company logged one of its best safety years ever in 2015, with an accident-free record at its West Palm Beach and St. Petersburg locations and a decline in reported injuries at locations in Melbourne and Fort Lauderdale.

“All Hill Yorkers deserve a lot of credit for their hard work and vigilant attitudes in achieving this impressive safety record in 2015,” said CEO Robert “Chip” Lafferty. “The #SafetyCHAMP program’s results are evidence of a successful partnership with our customers and each other that keeps the focus right where it belongs – getting everyone home safe.”

According to Moreno, the #SafetyCHAMP program is supported by daily checklists, practices and procedures that help reduce risks and stop injuries before they happen. A daily 7 a.m. text message provides additional safety tips and cautions. Its popularity among employees has led some to even opt their spouses and children into getting the morning safety reminders by texting HYSafe to 95577.

“The best defense is always prevention,” he observed. “That means wearing protective equipment when activities warrant them, following safe practices in all situations with consistency and diligence, and making choices that favor risk avoidance over risk taking.”

An outgrowth of The Comfort Champions – Hill York’s company culture and commitment to make life more comfortable for customers and employees – the #SafetyCHAMP program is proving to be a critical business component with a direct impact on health and wellbeing. And that’s no accident either.

Hill York Saves the City of Port St. Lucie $110,000 In Unneeded Generator Upgrades

Hill-York-Saves-Port-Saint-Lucie-MoneyOn the brink of an important decision, it pays to have a trusted partner offer their professional opinion. When the honest input comes from Florida’s leading commercial air conditioning and energy services company, the result can be a financial windfall.

That’s exactly what happened when the City of Port St. Lucie heard from Hill York in response to a request for bids to retrofit two generators at the civic center to meet new EPA standards. Hill York’s finding: The generator engines were exempt from EPA upgrades and the City could cancel their bid, saving the $110,000 allocated for the project.

“Part of a successful long-term energy conservation program is prioritizing where to implement change and where to capitalize on savings opportunities.” said John Macgowan, Hill York Account Manager – Energy Services. “As I reviewed the documents, it was clear to me that the generators were in a category that didn’t require upgrades.”

The City of Port St. Lucie had been told by their service provider that their two civic center generators no met EPA compliance for participation in Florida Power & Light’s Interruptible Program. After receiving preliminary quotes, $110,000 was budgeted and bids were solicited to perform the work. Of the six contractors that responded, only Hill York identified the generators as exempt.

In a letter to Macgowan, the City of Port St. Lucie’s Director of Procurement Management, Cheryl Shansberger, expressed thanks for Hill York’s honesty.

“Due to your firm’s interest in the project, and review of the bid specifications, you have assisted the City of Port St. Lucie with a significant cost savings by not having to retrofit the generators.” wrote Shansberger.

Noted Macgowan: “Improving energy efficiency and reducing operating costs requires expertise in many technical areas. That includes a thorough understanding of EPA regulations. Hill York is always ready to help our customers save money any way we can.”

The City of Port St. Lucie and Hill York have a long standing partnership in pursuit of energy efficiency and infrastructure improvements. In 2013, Hill York completed the implementation of six energy conservation measures at the main municipal complex that have saved the City in excess of $135,000 a year in energy costs. City officials called the self funding project “an absolute victory for the City and taxpayers.”

Hill York’s Robert Birch Earns 2015 CASF Craftsmanship Award

Robert S. Lafferty Sr. Central Energy Plant At NSU Draws Praise For HVAC and Sustainable Energy Achievement

Hill York’s outstanding work on the innovative engineering and design of the Robert S. Lafferty Sr. Central Energy Plant at Nova Southeastern University netted a coveted Craftsmanship Award from the Construction Association of South Florida (CASF) at their annual recognition event on November 5.

Hill York team member Robert Birch was selected as the recipient of the award for the job he and his crew performed installing three chillers and other major HVAC equipment capable of cooling 5,000,000 square feet of NSU’s campus. The chillers take advantage of off-peak utility pricing to avoid the high cost of electricity during peak hours.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition for our hard work,” said Birch. “We couldn’t have earned it without the support from our entire Hill York team and our project partners from NSU and C. Davis Electric.”

The Robert S. Lafferty Sr. Central Energy Plant was designed and built for the university and acclaimed as one of the largest energy storage systems in the United States. The three-story, state-of-the-art structure is expected to save the university more than $500,000 annually or $17.3 million over the life of the plant. It provides cooling that is both energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The CASF Craftsmanship Awards Program started in 1958 and is now in its 57th year. Nominees are selected by construction industry professionals and awards are given to celebrate outstanding achievement by tradesmen on building projects throughout South Florida.

Hill York and Alerton Put Florida Clients In Command With Open Protocol Building Control Systems

Alerton Logo(FLORIDA) Hill York, Florida’s leading commercial air conditioning company, and Alerton, an innovative manufacturer of building control systems, have teamed up to give Florida facility owners the power to create more comfortable environments while reducing energy use.

Since joining Alerton’s global network of more than 150 dealers last year, Hill York has increased its controls offerings in South Florida’s tri-county region. There, the company is authorized to sell and implement Alerton and other manufacturer building control systems for clients needing support with new construction, retrofit, service and energy management projects.

“We share Alerton’s commitment to help clients get the best comfort and energy performance out of their buildings,” said Rob Pulsifer, Hill York Vice President – Building Solutions. “Giving building owners the flexibility to harness new and improved control technologies utilizing an open communication platform is an empowering advantage for them and a strategic growth area for us.”

July 2 | Hill York Launches WennSoft To Enhance Customer Service

Hill York has completed implementation of the WennSoft Signature Series as its new software solution to better serve customers throughout Florida. WennSoft will complement and enhance Hill York’s existing business processes and activities at its Florida offices, improving efficiency, database management, scheduling, reporting, and creating cost savings.

“We looked for a fully integrated system to track and quote Retrofit and Construction projects, manage and perform service and maintenance, and provide technology to support our field force,” said Ken Sadlowski, Hill York’s director of information technology.

Executive Vice President Mark Kerney led a months-long, multi-state search that culminated in the selection of WennSoft in January 2014. Implementation of the software began that April. “It took a while to find what we needed, but we made a great choice,” he observed.

“What’s exciting is we’re not done,” said Kerney, who told us that this is just one very large step in updating Hill York’s technology to Make Life More Comfortable. Technicians have also been outfitted with new smart devices which will pair with a mobile application that will allow them to see all the account details instantly. Additionally, a document organization application and customer relationship manager will be added in the coming days. Finally, a web-enabled platform is a part of the next stage of implementation to provide customer access to online information. “And wait until you see our Energy Dashboard,” Kerney added.

With the WennSoft having gone live on June 15, Hill York’s WennSoft project team advises customers to allow for the possibility of a few early stage hiccups and notes that invoices and other documents will have a new look. Customers are encouraged to contact them with any concerns.

“From a technology perspective, seeing the leaps forward Hill York has made from where we started to where we are now is very exciting,” said President and CEO Chip Lafferty. “Most importantly, it’s another way to let our customers know that we don’t just want to make their environments more comfortable – we are committed to making their lives more comfortable.”

Hill York welcomes customer comments and feedback on the WennSoft program at comfortchampion@hillyork.com.

March 15 | Energy Solutions Group Captures Clients Over $6 Million In Savings

Facility Efficiency Projects Answer Call For Energy and Cost Reductions

Implementing cost-saving energy conservation programs is a challenge that’s become a high priority for Florida’s building owners. For Hill York, the state’s leading commercial air conditioning company, the growing need for comprehensive services prompted the launch six years ago of their Energy Solutions Group.

With $1.8 million in energy savings earned for clients in 2014 and over $6 million since 2008, Hill York’s all-out commitment to boost efficiency and reduce utility costs is bagging notable benefits. Out of 30 completed energy projects, they’ve realized a remarkable 102% of projected savings. Such success is hardly by chance. Their meticulously-developed system is driven by technical expertise and client collaboration and anchored by a third party validated process endorsed by agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

“Improving energy efficiency is a highly technical, multi-faceted enterprise,” said Rob Pulsifer, Hill York’s vice president of energy solutions. “We have a team of Certified Energy Managers, LEED Accredited Professionals, Certified Demand Side Management Professionals, and Energy Engineering Specialists that partner with clients to determine the best course of action on a case by case basis.”

Employing a co-authored approach that addresses specific issues and objectives, Hill York’s energy programs are strategically designed to be self-funding through sustained efficiency gains and cost savings. Specialized offerings include energy management systems, chiller plant optimization, and energy service agreements, with the programs typically producing energy reductions ranging from 20 to 40 percent and some results as high as 60 percent. Among the client success stories:

  • Hill York designed and built a Central Energy Plant for Nova Southeastern University that is recognized as one of the largest energy storage systems in the United States. It’s on track to save NSU over $17.3 million over the life of the system.
  • ICORR Properties International’s partnership with Hill York earned the EPA’s ENERGY STAR® certification for superior efficiency at One Sarasota Tower. The office building’s overall energy consumption dropped by an annual average of 34%.
  • Hill York spearheaded six energy conservation measures at the City of Port St. Lucie’s main municipal complex. The program is projected to save the city in excess of $154,000 a year.
  • A major infrastructure improvement project at Leesburg Regional Medical Center was conducted by Hill York to increase energy efficiency and facility comfort. In the two years since its completion, it has reduced operating expenses by over $175,000 a year.

“We’ve been crafting our business model and perfecting our energy services for six years now,” observed Pulsifer, who noted that Hill York’s energy-related projects have swelled from one in 2008 to 35 in 2014. “As we plan and carry out the most results-minded programs in the industry, seeing many of our clients achieve record efficiency and savings is an exciting signal for us to keep forging forward.”

More energy-conscious building owners will no doubt follow Hill York’s lead as they create sustainable futures for facilities, communities and the environment.

A full service commercial air conditioning company, Hill York provides system maintenance, service, repairs, energy solutions, and installation for a wide range of heating, cooling and ventilations systems. Founded in 1936, the company serves the state of Florida.

March 15 | Hill York Helps Energy Grant Hopefuls Win Funding, Retrofit Facilities

A long-time partner with Florida building owners in cutting energy use and boosting operating efficiency, Hill York has recently proven to be an able ally in getting results for state energy grant candidates.

Only four of the 25 applicants for Florida’s Energy Efficient Retrofits for Public Facilities Grant Program have been awarded full funding. Hill York co-authored the grant submissions for two of them.

“Enhancing efficiency and reducing operating costs requires expertise in many technical areas,” said Rob Pulsifer, Hill York’s vice president of energy solutions. “With our convergence of services strategy, we look at everything that can influence efficiency and write the grant application from a foundation of complete facility knowledge and project planning insight. We’re now three for three in grant writing, so our track record speaks for itself.”

Hill York’s approach was a formula for success in winning the full $75,000 in available grant funds for both the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale and the Salvation Army of Palm Beach County. The Coral Ridge Church project involves a comprehensive energy efficiency program that encompasses new HVAC equipment, repaired insulation, and a new energy management system. The Salvation Army work calls for the implementation of energy management systems at multiple facilities.

“The convergence of services provided by our energy solutions team encompasses benchmarking, building analysis, project development, construction and implementation, and continuous monitoring of building systems,” noted Pulsifer. “It’s been the key to achieving big gains in long-term energy savings and facility efficiency for many of our public and private sector customers.”

As announced recently by Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam, the Hill York projects are two of only 18 around the state awarded grants to retrofit public buildings for enhanced energy efficiency.

“Improving energy efficiency in buildings used by the public will save energy and save taxpayer dollars,” Putnam pointed out.

Qualifying projects include replacing indoor lighting, insulation upgrades, replacement of HVAC units and ducts, and installation of energy management systems. The grant program is funded under the State Energy Program with approximately $1.1 million allocated by the U.S. Department of Energy.

A full-service commercial air conditioning company, Hill York provides system maintenance, service, repairs, energy solutions and installation for a wide range of heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Founded in 1936, the company serves the state of Florida.
